Kill a Kitten

It was not ever my intention to update this page.
However after a year and some (this page was first published in late Feb 2000) I still get letters from Stephen Lynch fans defending this song.

Most of those letters are coming from kids under 20 ... the latest being a 15 year old male who actually was a pretty cool kid. He did admit that when he first heard the song he thought it was gross ... but then when he was told it was a joke he could accept the song as such.

This young man is the heart of my objection to this song.

A young and impressionable young man changed his mind on something he did not consider funny or a joke because someone told him he was wrong.

Abuse is not funny in any way shape or form.

We have just had a several day dialog on this subject which has in turn caused this update.

The point I tried to make to this young man was simply that because someone tells you material or circumstance is a joke ... it does not make it so. I told him of the group of young high school students who beat a dog to death as a joke ... I think we can all recognize that WAS NO JOKE.

I resent Stephen trying to con the world into thinking this material is a joke and funny ... I resent even more being maligned by fans who are upset that I too do not see this material as a joke. A point of interest is only a couple of these fans admit to actually thinking the song is funny themselves. From that I can only conclude the real issue seems to be censorship to them. Censorship was never the issue since I have said from the beginning Stephen has every right to write, publish and perform any material he chooses. But when he does then he needs to step up to the plate and be responsible for the fallout that comes from his action.

No one so far has decreed Stephen Lynch or any of his fans the "god/gods of comedy" ... to my knowledge they do not have a lock on what the world should accept as funny or a joke.

So this song still remains a sad, sick lyrics written by a young man clawing his way up the comedic ladder ... why he actually wrote the song I do not really know ... nor do I care. What I do know is he put himself on a very hot seat and got adequately fried.

Unfortunately as far as I know rather than accept the blame for the problem that surrounds him ... he blames all of the world who has very loudly rejected this song as a joke.

On to the original story.

Stephen Lynch and I have been corresponding for a few days.
I have found him to be very much a gentleman.
Under the circumstance it has to be very difficult to be hammered by animal lovers for a song you have created.
It would be my guess Stephen had no idea what a firestorm his lyrics would cause in the world when it was discovered.

We on the net for the most part have no opportunity to see Stephen live.
Taking a lyrics out of its song setting or live act routine is difficult.
You have only a flat page of text.
In this case that text was offensive to a lot of people not to mention animal lovers.

Stephen thought his audience was adult. The clubs he plays are for adults. The internet has no boundaries. The unsupervised young are the problem.

I am not an advocate for censorship.
I am certainly not an advocate for pornography.
I do however think every ADULT has the right to view what they choose.
I also think parents are responsible to supervise their children while on the net.
That is clearly not the case much of the time.

Therein lies the problem.
Case study shows young children when exposed to violence, abuse and animal cruelty are at risk of acting out in those ways.
We know that adult and children alike are suggestible.
We know that people will follow a suggestion that many times they would not consider on their own.
This lyrics though considered satire and mockery and just flat comedy by some for the most part is not accepted that same way by most.
We know animal abuse and human abuse are connected
We know there is a common thread in serial killers.
That common thread is animal abuse.

We could argue until the cows come home on whether this lyrics promotes animal abuse or condones it.

The point is those who have promoted it (the song) are now running for cover under the barrage of outrage by a lot of people.
In doing so they have not taken responsibility for their part in all of this.
You are smart people you look over the information here and make your own judgment.

For those of us in the trenches fighting for humane treatment of animals it has been a long hard struggle. To deal with the issues brought up in this song on a daily basis would certainly take the humor out of even the most dyed in the wool jokester.

In the past few days the counter on this page has gone crazy. One would think this was a porno page.

I guess we can thank opie and anthony for that as I am told they announced this address on the radio and I am also told they have placed this address on their website under "enemies of opie and anthony"..... I thank them for the plug.

It is even more clear what kind of audience they play to and what they promote.
Below I will post some of the mail that comes from the fans of Stephen Lynch and opie and anthony.

Some very interesting points to note:

  • Out of the avalanche of hits to this page I received to date 17 e-mails in support of Stephen and opie and anthony show.
  • All were male.
  • Only 3 had any kind of logic that one could call valid or follow.
  • The rest were either very young kids or if adult very immature. I am sure these kids thought they were helping Stephen's cause but they only proved how very immature and bent much of his audience really is.
    These young ones maintain I have no sense of humor.

    To the contrary...I thought each and every one of these guys was a joke (albeit it on society).

    I am not sure how a couple of "shock jocks" named opie and anthony got in the middle of all of this.....but they did. I am told by a fan of theirs they are a couple of VERY popular radio guys from NYC....that they claim almost all of the male listeners between 20 and 40 in their time slot.

    Apparently their popularity is still just stuck in the east because I could find no one out here who has ever heard of them.

    Here are a few link quotes from this unofficial Opie and Anthony site:

  • "THE OPIE & ANTHONY DRINKING GAME (ND EDITION) You know have another great reason to get shitfaced! (as if you needed one)."

  • "SPIKE'S WEBSITE We all know and love her latex-clad body so dearly. Visit her site and make an appointment to get spanked, beaten, kicked in the nuts, humiliated, babied, ranting you can think of!"

  • "PREGNANT CELESTE'S PAGE This is Celeste, the 25 year-old pregnant lady who came in to strip for Opie. The page might still be under construction, but she's very pregnant in what we saw!"

    This same fan told me that advertisers were clamoring to sponsor this show.
    How he would know this is beyond me.

    From this I suppose we could conclude that the opie and anthony listener is a male who range in age from 20 to 40 get a charge out of cool pics of the guys peeing, looks forward to getting "shitfaced", gets off on watching very pregnant strippers and rolls on the floor laughing at a song on how to "kill a kitten".

    I'd say these fans are pretty intelligent, mature and adult....wouldn't you?
    NOT according to my definition!

    One could further conclude that the advertisers clamoring to sponsor this show must be alcohol rehabs., condom companies and psychiatrists.

    I have sent copies of these letters to Stephen so he too can see how mature some of his fans are...it is pretty clear these fans nor opie and anthony are helping Stephen's cause...but then why should they care they have nothing to lose.

    I have removed the complete e-mail address of those who sent me mail.
    It is not necessary to lash out at them further.
    Their mail is displayed only to demonstrate what the suggestion by opie and anthony to take care of them (meaning Tracy and myself) has generated.

    Opie and anthony fans are not happy about what they see.
    They say this is not typical.
    I of course do not know they are right and they probably don't either.
    I do know one thing for sure these are real.
    To date (Aug 15, 2000) less than 1% of those who have responded to this page are over 18.
    With that information I would say the would be advertisers are seriously off target.

    I think you can easy to see how intelligent, mature and adult these fans are.

    Tracy's page was not taken out by opie and anthony for lynch fans contrary to what opie and anthony have to say on their unofficial website.
    They would like everyone to believe the fans are powerful enough to do as they choose.
    My site is still up and running in spite of threats made by one of these fans "we will shut you down"....ahh the delusions of grandeur these kids are pumped into having.
    Then last but not least ... I was told not long ago opie and anthony were cancelled ... I am not sure if that is true ... if it is there is no great loss. :)

    Stephen Lynch has decided to remove the "kill a kitten" lyrics from his site.
    In all fairness Stephen can not be blamed for the stupidity of his fans.
    He however now has a better perspective about how un-adult they actually are.
